About me
Movies have given me so much. A greater appreciation of history and wanting to learn more. An escape. Shared experience. A fascination of how movies are made. Meaningful conversation. Inspiration. To think visually. A reason to be.
I was fortunate enough to grow up at a time of the Late, Late Show, and parents who’d let me stay up on weekends and watch. The ABC Sunday Night Movie was an event, and a trip to the cinema was a social event like no other. Imagine standing in line around the block, or the length of the mall to see a movie. There was even a drive-in theatre in our neighborhood that I could watch from my bedroom window. Movies were a huge part of my growing up.
In the late-1980s I studied film making. It was not a theoretical course, but a practical one, so I was able to produce, direct, write, shoot film. 16mm, edited by hand. I was very passionate about my education, and although I graduated with honors, I allowed my passion to be misdirected, and my career ended up going in a less than creative direction. I ended up working in home video distribution, then ultimately working for 15 years at a video store, which turned out to be a wonderful experience.
The video store closed in 2015, and now here I am, too old to be in the production business, but not too old to share my refocused passion for classic films. The films I grew up with, the films that inspired me, the films I have recently discovered, the films I have yet to discover, and share that experience of film and life.
In 2000, I was diagnosed with PTSD, after a robbery that occurred at work. This brought to the surface my life-long struggle with depression and anxiety, and links to events in my life that impacted who I am. Some links also extent to some of the movies in my life, and if you will indulge me, I hope to share some of these links. So, yes, this truly is a personal journey through film. I hope you find it, first and foremost, entertaining. But I also hope that from time to time you find it insightful.
